Focus prides itself on its progressive, developmental ethos that aims to place the athlete's improvement at the top of our priority list. Practice curriculums are planned, periodized and designed by our coaching director Alan Good - a USA Field Hockey coach educator and varsity head coach at The Covenant School - and delivered by a staff that has extensive field hockey experience. These coaches also include former Towson University assistant coach Heather Hodges and ex-JMU goalkeeper Steph Tarafas, while the club also hand-picks current and recently graduated NCAA Division I college players - such as USA U21 panellist Makayla Gallen and former USA indoor junior national team players Erin Shanahan and Lizzy Shim - to assist our head coaches.
Focus' emphasis on quality coaching ensures correct teaching of basic and complex skills and introductions to tactical concepts and match awareness. All of this is executed via a TGFU (teaching games for understanding) approach, where the athletes learn field hockey by getting lots of touches in fun, competitive games.
Our club program in Charlottesville is for girls who have experience in the sport, have learned the basics and are looking to take their skills to the next level. We have a mixture of players who are looking to improve themselves to try and make their school team, and also those who are aiming to play in college. Focus has a proud 100% record of helping our graduates who have strived to play in the NCAA go on to do so. Our club runs on a seasonal basis to allow flexibility alongside high school/AGFHL seasons and other sports, while also going year-round for those who wish to do so. Club players partake in weekly practices on weekends and compete in tournaments in and out of state.
Our spring programs are open to U12, U14, U16 and U19 players and run from early December until late February, comprising weekly training sessions, intra-club playdays and the option to participate in tournaments, at an additional cost.
Practices kick off on March 16 and run weekly on Saturdays on the turf field at Monticello High School until June 15; the season ends with the annual Focus Showcase tournament in Williamsburg, VA on June 22. There will also be three intraclub playdays throughout the season, which allow us to gather players from all our club sites in Charlottesville, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach for in-house competition. These also allow us to generate video using our HiPod telescopic camera, which can be used for both analysis and recruiting highlight reels, and to improve our club by facilitating training and educational seminars for our coaches.
Tournaments are optional extras that incur additional cost; you can find out more about these and the sign-up process in our new members guide.
Spring season practices begin on March 16 and run until June 15. There are intraclub playdays on March 2, April 7 and May 4 at a variety of venues. Full details will be available on the club calendar in due course.
U12/U14 players will train from 3-5pm on Saturdays at Monticello, with U16/U19 players practicing from 5-7pm at the same venue.
Pricing - includes all practices and playdays
U12 & U14: $300
U16 & U19: $375
All players are required to purchase a Focus pinnie from our online club shop at a cost of $20, if they do not already own one. January 1 is the age-group cut-off date, e.g. if you turned 14 before January 1, 2019 then you are a U16 player.
