Focus prides itself on its progressive, developmental ethos that aims to place the athlete's improvement at the top of our priority list. Practice curriculums are planned, periodized and designed by our coaching director Alan Good - a USA Field Hockey coach educator and varsity head coach at The Covenant School - and delivered by a staff that has extensive field hockey experience. These coaches also include former Towson University assistant coach Heather Hodges and ex-JMU goalkeeper Steph Tarafas, while the club also hand-picks current and recently graduated NCAA Division I college players - such as USA U21 panellist Makayla Gallen and former USA indoor junior national team players Erin Shanahan and Lizzy Shim - to assist our head coaches.
Focus' emphasis on quality coaching ensures correct teaching of basic and complex skills and introductions to tactical concepts and match awareness. All of this is executed via a TGFU (teaching games for understanding) approach, where the athletes learn field hockey by getting lots of touches in fun, competitive games.
Our club program in Charlottesville is for girls who have experience in the sport, have learned the basics and are looking to take their skills to the next level. We have a mixture of players who are looking to improve themselves to try and make their school team, and also those who are aiming to play in college. Focus has a proud 100% record of helping our graduates who have strived to play in the NCAA go on to do so. Our club runs on a seasonal basis to allow flexibility alongside high school/AGFHL seasons and other sports, while also going year-round for those who wish to do so. Club players partake in weekly practices on weekends and compete in tournaments in and out of state.
This summer, Focus Field Hockey is bringing a series of skill sessions to Charlottesville, to help players of all ages and stages sharpen up technically ahead of their high school and AGFHL seasons. This program comprises six themed 90-minute midweek evening sessions on the turf field at St Anne's-Belfield School. All sessions will run from 6-7.30pm.
Thursday June 27: Elimination skills / outplaying your opponent
Tuesday July 2: 3D skills
Tuesday July 9: Passing and receiving
Tuesday July 16: Defending
Tuesday July 23: Goalscoring
Tuesday July 30: Putting it all together - Competition Day
Members can also participate in our intraclub playday in Richmond on Saturday July 27. These playdays allow us to gather players from all our club sites in Charlottesville, Williamsburg, Richmond and Virginia Beach for in-house competition. While offered as part of your summer membership with Focus, the playday does require separate signup.
We will be operating three different skill groups for these sessions: high schoolers, middle schoolers and elementary schoolers. Due to space constraints and a desire to ensure each player gets the requisite individual attention from their coaches, each group is initially limited to just 20 places on a first-come, first-served basis. If the group you would like to register for is full, please email alan(at)focusfieldhockey(dot)com to be placed on a waiting list.
Pricing: $125 for all 6 sessions
